Newcastle Gateshead regeneration – master-planning a successful future
A decade ago, Gateshead’s regeneration strategy was just that – a strategy noted down on a piece of paper. Well, a rather snazzy looking PDF, to be precise, but it was still just a plan. Today, the northern town is a thriving urban environment that has seen projects such as Gateshead Quays come to life, bringing jobs, amenities and a bustling sense of purpose with them.
“Gateshead’s regeneration over the past ten years has been remarkable. The 2008 Gateshead Centre Regeneration Delivery Strategy and the 2010 Gateshead Quays Masterplan Report paved the way for the flurry of activity that we’ve seen in recent years, building on previously completed activity both in the city centre and along the quayside. Now, it’s time for Gateshead to take these areas to the next level.”
Hailed as ‘the missing piece of the jigsaw,’ the latest Gateshead Quays development plan, which was unveiled in late 2018, will seek to connect the waterfront to the town centre. The ambitious plan covers a 3.84 hectare site, which will become home to a £250 million state-of-the-art, 12,500 seat entertainment arena. A conference and exhibition centre, restaurants, bars and hotels are also included in the plans, along with extensive public realm.
The Department for International Trade is officially backed the scheme, which has been developed by Gateshead Council in collaboration with Ask Real Estate, PATRIZIA and world-renowned architects HOK. The completed scheme is estimated to be worth £30 million annually in terms of its boost to the regional economy, drawing an extra 296,000 visitors to the area.
This game-changing regeneration work will impact many areas of life in the city, with the result that those investing in sectors like residential property are keen to take advantage of the coming benefits. Developments such as Hopper House allow them to do just that. The 81 spacious, elegant apartments have been designed with modern professionals in mind and are only around a 10-minute walk from the waterfront. With an on-site gym, sauna and steam room, this is very much a development for the Gateshead of the future – and Surrenden Invest is delighted to be the property investment company that is presenting it to the market!
“This is an immensely exciting time for Gateshead and for those who want to be part of its thriving future. The ambitious, inspirational visions of those behind the past decade of regeneration in the town centre and along the waterfront – and, indeed the work that came before that – have delivered some outstanding facilities. Now, the latest plan is set to finish the job, creating an outstanding new area that will deliver benefits to all those who live in the town, as well as to the wider region.”
